The "Monfragüe Natural Park"
was the first protected space in Extremadura. This natural
area can be considered to be a valley cut through the Tajo
and Tietar rivers. The mountain that definite it have an
important variety of holm-oak woods, Mediterranean bushes,
rocky places, dammings and watercourses, allowing the existence
of a rich and varied animal and vegetable life.
The autochthonous vegetation is very
well preserved, with a great diversity. In the fauna, there
are some of the most significant species of the Spanish
nature as the Imperial Eagle, the Black Vulture, the Black
Stork or the Lynx, all of them in danger of extinction.
The Romans named to this place “Monsfragorum” that is to
say, rough mountain. On April 4, 1979, Monfragüe is declared
a natural park.
